The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood heralded an exciting new direction in British art, and the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and their contemporaries remain some of the most popular, evocative and recognisable Victorian art. Liverpool patrons and artists encouraged the group when London critics were hostile, and the city became home to its own Pre-Raphaelite school. Artists such as William Windus, John Lee, James Campbell and William Davis adopted Pre-Raphaelite principles whilst developing their own unique style and identity. The Walker Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery and Sudley House hold some of the finest works by both London-based and Liverpool Pre-Raphaelite artists, 71 of which are featured in this book.

Artists included: Bond, William Joseph Julius Caesar; Brett, John; Brown, Ford Madox; Burne-Jones, Edward; Campbell, James; Davis, William; Fortescue-Brickdale, Eleanor; Hughes, Arthur; Hunt, Alfred William; Hunt, William Holman; Jack, George; Lee, John Ingle; Marshall, Peter Paul; Martineau, Robert Braithwaite; Millais, John Everett; Morgan, Evelyn de; Morris & Co; Munro, Alexander; Newton, John Edward; Rossetti, Dante Gabriel; Sandys, Emma; Sandys, Frederick; Shaw, John Byam; Solomon, Simeon; Stanhope, John Roddam Spencer; Stillman, Maria Spartali; Strudwick, John Melhuish; Wallis, Henry; Webb, Philip; Williamson, Daniel Alexander; Windus, William Lindsay; Woolner, Thomas; Worrall, Joseph Edward

It goes without saying that all Art School and University libraries should have a copy of this excellent monograph. Considering the wealth and quality of the full-colour illustrations, the price asked is very attractive and makes it perfectly affordable to private individuals interested in the various facets, including ‘local’ ones, of this remarkable movement.

'The book is beautifully produced and illustrated. Even those already knowledgeable about Pre-Raphaelitism will learn new information about the work and artists presented in Pre-Raphaelite Treasures. The book is invaluable as a guide to Pre-Raphaelitism in the NML collections and in the North-West generally. As a Liverpool-based art history lecturer I will certainly be ordering copies of the book for our university library and will encourage students to use it to support their visits to the Walker Art Gallery, the Lady Lever Art Gallery and Sudley House.'
